AtthebattleofGettysburg,whichconstitutedtheturning-pointintheUSCivilWar,aFederalsoldierhadhisleftlegshatteredbyaball.Ashelayontheground,hesawGeneralLee,CommanderoftheConfederates,orderedhisretreat.Amostbitteranti-Southman,thesoldiertauntedtheGeneralasherodenear,andshouted,"HurrahfortheUnion!"
Thesoldiergaveanaccountofwhathappenedafterwards:"TheGeneralstopped,dismounted,andcametowardsme.Iatfirstthoughthemeanttokillme.Butashecameuphelookeddownatmewithsuchasadexpressionuponhisfacethatallfearleftme.Heextendedhishandtome,andgraspingminefirmly,said,'Myson,Ihopeyouwillsoonbewell.'"

蓋茨堡戰役是美國南北戰爭的轉捩點。戰役裏，北軍一名士兵左腿被彈丸打碎，躺在地上，看着南軍司令李將軍下令撤退。這士兵恨南人入骨，見李將軍騎馬走近，就出言相譏，高叫：「北方聯邦萬歲！」
這士兵紀錄了其後的事：「李將軍停下來，下馬朝我走近。最初，我以為他要殺我，但他走到我身旁，低頭望着我，那憂傷神情把我心中恐懼完全驅散。他伸出手，緊緊把我的手握住，說：『孩子，希望你可以早點復元。』」
【附注】一八六三年蓋茨堡戰役是南軍敗北的先聲。李將軍一八六五年二月受命為南軍總司令，到四月向北軍投降，戰後任華盛頓學院院長。學院後改名為「華盛頓與李大學」（WashingtonandLeeUniversity）。
