Lightingfirestocreateasmokescreenisanancientruseinmilitarytactics.In1701,inabattlewiththeSaxons,whowereencampedonthesouthsideoftheDvina,theSwedesmadeuseofthestrongnorthwindbythefiringofvastquantitiesofwettedstraw.Adensesmokesweptacrosstheriver.Undercoverofthisdensecloudseveralboatssneakedacrossloadedwithstillmorestraw,whichwasthenignitedonthesouthbank,completelyblindingandstiflingtheSaxonsandrenderingitimpossibleforthemtoknowifthepassageoftheriverwasbeingattemptedornot.WhentheSwedesatlastdidcross,theenemy'sforcesweresoconfusedandblindedbythesmokethattheirgunswereworkedatrandomandwithlittleeffect.

生火製造煙幕，是古老的戰爭詭術。一七○一年，瑞典和撒克森軍隊對陣，撒克森軍在杜味拿河南岸紮營。瑞典軍借助強勁北風，燒起大量弄濕了的稻草，濃煙瀰漫，隨風渡河，幾條小船在煙幕遮掩下，悄悄靠近南岸，燃起船上稻草。撒克森軍隊有目難視，呼吸維艱，無法知道敵人是不是正乘機過河。最後，瑞典軍過河了，撒克森軍隊由於被濃煙迷了眼睛，狼狽不堪，槍砲亂開，往往都成虛發。
【附注】十七世紀中葉以後，瑞典國力日盛，駸駸成為波羅的海地區霸主。一七○○年，俄羅斯、丹麥、波蘭、薩克森（Saxony）聯手對付瑞典，揭開了北方大戰（theGreatNorthernWar）序幕。戰爭一七二一年結束，瑞典的霸主地位被俄羅斯取代。
