Sony’s new PlayStation 5 unavailable in China, could spark buying frenzy in Hong Kong
Sony’s new PlayStation 5 video game console will not be sold in mainland China, which has sparked concerns that there could be a race among mainland Chinese people to order the new console in Hong Kong.
Details of Sony’s hotly anticipated console were announced on Thursday, with countries including the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea seeing it on Nov. 12. It will be available in Hong Kong a week later.
Pre-orders in North America have already sold out, with reports that Chinese citizens were considering buying the console from Japan or Hong Kong. Some said it would be safer to get the Hong Kong version because they could physically purchase it in stores and bring it back to the mainland. They said it would also be cheaper than the Japanese and U.S. versions after tax.
The PS5 will come in two models, with the disc version selling at HK$3,980 (US$513) and the disc-less digital version at HK$3,180. Potential buyers in Hong Kong said they were concerned about skyrocketing prices due to its unavailability in mainland China, and they would rather wait till next year when the second batch comes.
Sony was unable to sell the PS5 in mainland China because of tight censorship rules for sensitive content in video games. Another concern from mainland Chinese users was that even if they bought the Hong Kong version or other overseas versions, they would not be able to download games online like its predecessor PS4.
