HSBC freezes family’s bank accounts again, says ex-Hong Kong lawmaker on exile

Ted Hui, former Hong Kong opposition lawmaker on exile, finds the HSBC bank accounts of his family frozen again.
Hui, a former member of the Democratic Party, announced his exile while in Denmark last week. He and his family’s bank accounts at more than one bank were temporarily frozen. Two of the banks, including HSBC, have reportedly received police orders to freeze Hui and his family’s assets again.
Hui confirmed on Monday morning that they were denied access to some of their bank accounts in Hong Kong again.
Commercial Radio reported on Monday morning that HSBC restricted certain functions of Hui’s account according to orders from police, instead of a complete suspension. Hui refuted the statement on Monday noon, revealing that his and his family’s bank accounts displayed their available balance as zero and they were unable to deposit, transfer or withdraw money.
Now in the United Kingdom, his family have filed complaints through phone and emails. Aside from failing to move funds from their accounts through online banking services, they were also unable to withdraw money from local ATM machines.
HSBC refused to comment on individual cases yet claimed that facts were distorted. Hui demanded the global bank to provide a direct response to “clarify which fact was distorted and make the incident transparent.” Hui lambasted HSBC for concealing its mistakes and glossing over the regime and its own actions.
Reputation and credibility are a bank’s most important asset, he said, stressing the severity of the incident, and how HSBC has failed the trust of customers around the world. The veteran activist also urged the bank to publish records of their complaints.
