Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen appears alongside China’s Xi Jinping and U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on the latest front cover of French magazine Le Point, which ranks her among its five global leaders in recognition of her administration’s outsized influence in global affairs.
For its cover story entitled “America, Asia, Europe … Who will dominate the world?” Le Point features a digitally edited image of Tsai racing shoulder to shoulder against Xi, Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The article praised Tsai for the transparency of her government in combating the COVID-19 pandemic and her efforts to get Taiwan’s people to work together. It was the island’s civil awareness that enabled it to keep the coronavirus at bay, the magazine said. When the pandemic halted daily life around the world, Taiwan went on as usual “as if Taipei is living on another planet,” it said.
Taiwan’s response to the pandemic showed that the island’s technological expertise should not be ignored, Zsuzsa Anna Ferenczy, a former political adviser to the European Parliament, told Le Point.
While economic ties between Europe and mainland China are very important, it would be in the best interests of Europe to move toward closer ties with Taiwan while exercising caution, the article cited Ferenczy as saying.
The cover story by Le Point underscores Taiwan’s competitiveness and the important role it plays in global affairs, said Xavier Chang, spokesperson for the island’s Presidential Office.
The article also listed China, Russia and Turkey as three dictatorships that constitute a threat to the global order. It said recent isolationism by the U.S. had allowed China to take control of a number of international organizations.
“China is a rising power, but its centralization of authority and capital puts people off. Its plans for global domination will completely rule out thoughts for freedom, peace and stability,” it said.
