Chinese glacier adventurer ‘likely dead’ after misstep in Tibet
Glacier chaser Wang Xiangjun “is forever resting at his favorite waterfall,” his brother said after the Chinese adventurer went missing following a fateful slip.
Wang, 30, has been missing since Dec. 19 after he fell into a river in Nagqu in northern Tibet. The search for his body continues but it is unlikely that he has survived, according to Chinese media reports.
His companions had tried to rescue him but his down jacket had become too heavy, the reports said. They were also dragged into the water and by the time they made it back to land, Wang had been carried away by the stream.
Wang’s brother urged people not to flock to the location “for publicity” in a Douyin post on Saturday. He said the Sichuan-native would forever be with “his favorite waterfall.”
Wang, with over 3 million followers on China’s TikTok-equivalent Douyin, has photographed more than 70 glaciers in China since 2013. He had previously said that his documentation was to raise public awareness on environmental protection.
He shared his experiences at the United Nations’ climate change conference last year.
