【Second Opinion】Carrie Lam's Trillion dollars. (Mark Simon)
早前有報道指林鄭月娥要求僱主就強積金供款「畀多啲」。
My recent column on getting the government to kick in equally with us and our employer for our MPF's was quite upsetting to the pro-Beijing crowd.
It's a simple idea. We pay our current contribution as 1/3, our employer pays their's as 1/3, and the government comes in with an additional 1/3. It's a solid remedy for the old age crisis government claims is coming our way. More money in our MPF accounts for our retirement.
As such, it's puzzling the pro-Beijing folks were upset, as communists usually like money as much as capitalists. Yet, where I made my mistake was I forgot communists regard all money as their money. Once they take it, (taxing is taking), why on earth would they give it back?
This is a problem for Hong Kong. If Carrie Lam and our government can't find the value in helping us with our retirement, through an MPF contribution, by what logic can a tax cut happen? How do they justify lowering fees or tariff's?
The only logical argument for not giving the people of Hong Kong a contribution towards their MPF is that government has accepted the rational that they can spend our money better than us for our own self interest. With a trillion dollars soon to be in her coffers Carrie Lam can't cry poor mouth. There is no flood, no typhoon, that requires 2.5 years of government expenditures in reserve.
Carrie Lam will have a trillion dollars in fiscal reserves by this time next year. Whether a business or personal tax cut or a contribution to our MPF we will soon seen whether our new CE thinks government funds are for the people or for government to build its own bank account.
