Editorial: Wolf-warrior soon to go bust under pressure | Apple Daily HK
The United States has been frequently exerting pressure on China in the areas of technology, commerce, diplomacy, military, and education, putting the CCP officials in a difficult situation. High-level officials in their wolf-warrior stance have been facing obstacles all around during visits, and the KOLs' comments have only stirred up more troubles. A CCTV anchor claimed that the Kuomintang (KMT) came to Xiamen to attend the Straits Forum as an attempt to “seek peace”, and as a result, this forum that has been ongoing for 11 years almost got canceled. A founder of the Honker Union proclaimed that if the United States intervenes in the war with Taiwan in the future, China could detonate thousands of nuclear bombs to cause “destruction to the entire mankind”, causing a huge uproar both within the country and abroad. Such Ah-Q style peace-seeking and anti-human war-seeking only show that the CCP’s wolf-warrior mentality is poisoning the entire society, and that the wolf warrior is under such immense pressure from the United States that it is on the verge of exploding.
The Straits Forum has been held since 2009 and reached the 12th year. The KMT had originally planned to head a delegation to Xiamen for a meeting under former President of the Legislative Yuan, Wang Jin-pyng, while the Chinese side would normally send Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wang Yang. Due to the increased military threats and intimidation, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) military jets have repeatedly crossed the centerline of the Taiwan Strait, and the cross-strait relations have become increasingly tense. Some Chinese KOLs even clamored that now is the perfect moment to liberate Taiwan. When the CCTV anchor Li Hong commented on Wang Jin-pyng’s Xiamen trip, it was accompanied by the headline “Taiwan marine in danger, this man comes to seek peace with the mainland”.
This “peace-seeking” allegation infuriated both the blue and the green camps. The KMT demanded an apology from CCTV but to no avail, and made the decision to cancel Wang Jin-pyng’s trip and instead, sent former acting chairman Lin Rong-te to lead a Taiwanese business group to attend the meeting. Although the Forum was not canceled, it no longer follows its usual standards. Yet those on the CCP’s overseas commentary sites are still clamoring, “'seeking peace with mainland' caused controversy, Taiwan really wants a war?” From these, it can be seen that the theory of peace-seeking is a reflection of the CCP’s wolf-warrior diplomatic thinking.
Tensions across the Taiwan Strait are only one part of the vicious struggle between China and the United States. As Undersecretary of the State Department, Keith Krach, has planned to visit Taiwan this week to host the U.S.-Taiwan Economic and Commercial Dialogue, China will surely increase its frequency of having military aircraft and warships to harass Taiwan and showcase its wolf-warrior stance. However, if the CCP’s countermeasures against the buddying-up between Taiwan and the United States is only limited to the spreading of the theory of military reunification, in essence, it would on aggravate the anxiety in people and cause a blow to their confidence towards the CCP’s greatness, glory, and legitimacy.
In fact, when Wang Yi’s recent visit to the five European countries did not receive the well-advertised-in-advance warm welcome, it showed that the United States' pressure towards China has already snowballed all the way to Europe. China’s emphasis on the economic internal circulation, the orders to conserve food, were at least a demonstration of foresight. However, it’s easy to go from frugality to luxury, but difficult from luxury to frugality. The CCP’s wolf-warrior diplomacy and the strongman propaganda have already accustomed many Chinese people to showing off around the world. Now, the bad habit is hard to stop, how is one to run with his tail between his legs? How would they be nice to Taiwanese and Hongkongers?
In the face of the United States' aggression and pressure from all fronts, some Chinese KOLs can no longer swallow their pride. Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijing claimed that China should increase the number of nuclear warheads to 1,000 within a short period of time in order to “restrain the United States' strategic ambitions and impulsiveness towards China.” Zhao Shengye, one of the founders of China’s radical cyber patriotic organization, Honker Union, said in a bilingual Weibo post last weekend that, “As they intervene in Chinese affairs, have these Americans prepared enough to see God?” His proposal is for China to simultaneously detonate thousands of nuclear bombs in the Pacific Ocean, in the Himilayas, or in the depths of the Sichuan Basin, enough to show the United States, who is dedicated to contending with China and even meddling with the war to liberate Taiwan, that “its actions will ultimately lead to the destruction of all mankind.”
Some regard Zhao Shengye’s Weibo post as a naked nuclear threat to the world on behalf of the CCP, but that’d be giving him too much credit. Instead of calling such anti-mankind remarks some comment-first extreme warfare, they are really more of the hysteria of the Chinese wolf-warrior on the verge of explosion from pressure. Just as Wang Yi threatened that the Czech Republic would pay a heavy price for the parliamentary visit to Taiwan, the result was simply that the Czech Petrov piano order of 200,000 Euros (US$236,900) has been canceled. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced reciprocal restrictions on the diplomatic activities of American diplomats in China (including Hong Kong), and as a result, the United States suddenly announced that United States' Ambassador to China, Terry Edward Branstad, will step down and return home. It is apparent that President Trump will not be appointing a new ambassador in the near future, which is tantamount to lowering the Sino-U.S. relations to the level of chargé d’affaires. Does China have to counter-restrict them this way as well?
