Hong Kong people expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the city’s last colonial governor Chris Patten, after he encouraged Hongkongers to stand firm against the totalitarian regime in an Apple Daily video clip.

“I would like to thank him for speaking up for Hongkongers,” a ‘90s born local said. “I hope I can buy him egg tarts and coffee.”

“He is an outsider now, but he still keeps an eye on our situation,” another said.

An interviewee who has lived under Patten’s rule was very grateful for his unwavering support for Hong Kong people. “Some may find him nosy or putting an act on, but there is no need for someone who is in his seventies to do so.”

Apple Daily’s founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying also thanked Patten for having defended Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms through all these years. “Every time we are in crisis, you never fail to come out and voice your protection of our rule of law and freedom. To us, you seem to have never left.”
