‘Caveman style’ fight erupts between Indian and Chinese troops as border tension escalates
Chinese and Indian troops were reported to have engaged in a “caveman style” fight after Beijing and New Delhi accused each other of firing shots at the Himalayan border, prompting tensions between the two countries to soar to new heights.
Citing government sources, the Economic Times in India reported that more than 40 Chinese soldiers armed with rods, spears and clubs approached an Indian post along the line of control in the Ladakh region on Monday. The Chinese troops also carried machetes as well as small arms, the report said.
The report came after a video showing what internet users have described as a “caveman style” fight between the Chinese and Indian troops went viral on Twitter on Wednesday.
The video, believed to be shot from across the river, showed dozens of Indian soldiers armed with nail-studded rods embroiled in bodily combat with their Chinese counterparts near Mukhpari peak in the Chusul sector. The Chinese troops were able to stave off the opposition with their much larger weapons.
The video showed the Chinese side deploying more soldiers, forcing Indian troops to back off.
The cause of what Twitter users have called a “caveman style” fight is still unknown but Beijing and New Delhi have accused each other of opening fire as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate after the June 15 hand-to-hand combat that killed 20 Indian soldiers. China has not disclosed the number of casualties on its side following that clash.
According to Indian news outlets, Indian troops were able to fend off 50 to 60 Chinese soldiers during Monday’s standoff.
