一位讀者來信問：「Whichrecordalbumhassoldmorethananyother？（至今哪張唱片比其他各張暢銷？）一語，has、sold之間為甚麼沒有主詞（subject）？other之後不是應加s嗎？」
Sell（賣）這個字，讀者大概都知道是及物動詞（transitiveverb），須和受詞（object）連用，例如Whichrecordalbumhashesold？（他賣了哪張唱片？）一語，he是主詞，recordalbum是受詞。答案是HehassoldMichaelJackson'slatestrecordalbum（他賣了米高．積遜的最新唱片）之類。

但是，sell也可做不及物動詞（intransitiveverb），不和受詞連用，指商品銷售，例如：Whichrecordalbumsellsbetterthantheothers？（哪張唱片銷路比其他的好？）答案可以是MichaelJackson'slatestrecordalbumsellsbetterthantheothers（米高．積遜的唱片銷路比其他的都要好）之類。讀者說的那一句，sell字就是這樣用，只是用了完成時式。
同樣，貨物賣不出，可以說Itisnotselling；銷路好，則可說Itissellingwell。
至於other，指「所有其他的人或物」，固然要用複數形式，例如Itsellsbetterthantheothers；但說「另一個」或「其他任何一個」，則須用單數形式，例如：Ihavefoundoneglovebutnottheother（我找到一個手套，但找不到另一個）、Heismorelearnedthananyother（他比其他任何一人都要博學）。
