The People’s Liberation Army rebounded from a disappointing performance at last year’s International Army Games to take second place in the tank biathlon, despite a blunder involving the national flag and a fainting crew member.
The PLA Army and Air Force sent troops to compete at the event hosted by Russia, which involved participants from more than a dozen countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Vietnam.
The Chinese team was declared first runner-up in the tank biathlon on Saturday, which saw a Type 96 main battle tank complete an obstacle course and shooting range in one hour, 29 minutes and 30 seconds. Russia came first, with Belarus taking third place.
During a preliminary round on Aug. 23, the Chinese team hoisted the national flag the wrong way up during their celebration of their result. The troops quickly corrected their mistake when they realized their error.
On Aug. 30, a member of the Chinese tank crew fainted before the start of the semi-finals of the biathlon, which saw China face off against countries including Belarus, Azerbaijan and Serbia. The crewman was carried away to receive medical attention.
Despite a strong track record since 2014, the Chinese team fell out of the top three spots in the tank biathlon in 2019.
