A new round of talks between India and China are underway after tensions have again flared up at the disputed Himalayan border.
The brigade-commander level talks that began on Tuesday morning were held in Chushul, a village in the disputed Ladakh area, according to Indian news outlet Livemint.
The talks follow an Indian army statement released on Monday that accused China’s People’s Liberation Army of carrying out “provocative military movements” in the border area over the weekend.
“On the night of August 29/30, PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo,” the statement read.
It said it preempted the PLA’s activity on the Pangong Tso Lake in Ladakh and that it was “committed to maintaining peace and tranquility through dialogue but is also equally determined to protect its territorial integrity.”
The Chinese foreign ministry rejected India’s claim, with spokesperson Hua Chunying accusing India of damaging the consensus reached in previous meetings. She urged the country to stop any intimidating acts.
A clash between Chinese and Indian troops in June at the border — the worst in 60 years — led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese troops.
