Hong Kong to follow footsteps of Xinjiang and Tibet, human rights lawyer says

蘋果日報 2020/06/09 12:41

A Chinese human rights lawyer who has represented a jailed Tibetan activist has warned Hong Kong may follow the footsteps of Tibet and Xinjiang following the enactment of the national security laws, fearing democratic activists may be jailed for arbitrary reasons.
Liang Xiaojun told Apple Daily that “Hong Kong will increasingly become like mainland China” as authorities will tighten the grip on freedom of expression. He represented Tashi Wangchuk, a Tibetan local language activist who was jailed for five years for “inciting separatism” after appearing in a video of the New York Times in 2015.
“You will be just like us...the authorities will bring charges against whoever they target and then find the evidence. It’s their way to suppress freedom of expression,” he said. “Just look at Tibet and Xinjiang.”
Liang’s friend Wang Quanzhang, a leading human rights lawyer in China, was jailed for four and a half years over subversion charges. Liang fears campaigners in Hong Kong may face the same fight when the national security laws come into effect. “It’s very hard to draw a line here...if they say you are a separatist, then you are a separatist,” he said. “They will be in full control.”
