“Slogan-based” economy harmful to technological development in China, Huawei’s Ren Zhengfei says
“Slogan-based” planned economy has resulted in China lagging behind the United States in technological advancement. Chinese billionaire and Huawei Technologies co-founder Ren Zhengfei has said.
Ren has been at the forefront of a row between Washington and Beijing over the telecom-equipment giant with his daughter, the company’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, being stranded in Vancouver after she was arrested at the city’s airport in December 2018. She has been charged with fraud and could be extradited to the United States.
In an interview published on one of Huawei’s social media platforms, Ren was quoted as saying China is lagging behind the United States in technological advancement because it relied on building a “bubble economy” based on slogans.
“Those bubbles have also spilled over into academia...if we don’t get serious about building our own theories but rely on shouting slogans, we will not get any stronger over the next few decades,” he was quoted as saying in an article published on Huawei’s WeChat account. He added China needs to revamp relevant policies to attract talent from overseas and invest in education.
In an apparent rebuke of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s call for “self-reliance” in developing its own proprietary technology, Ren said China should take a collaborative approach in attracting talent and nurturing partnership with other countries, including bringing back Chinese engineers from overseas.
