Live well and follow our conscience (Lee Pik-Wah)

蘋果日報 2020/06/05 11:28

When I look back to what happened, it feels like a lifetime ago and that there is no turning back — a year has gone, the life once filled with monotonous and boring routines have gone far out of grasp.
In the past, all those days, months and years have gone by in the same way. We did what we should be doing: work hard and slack on, love and hate, wait to reunite, experience and enjoy life…everything changed. Now what happened in the past has become too luxurious to talk about, it is as absurd as talking about freedom with a prisoner.
I came across a poem written by Nalan Xingde, a Qing dynasty Chinese poet, one that he wrote to mourn his deceased wife. That line in the poem about how one looked back and discovered how at times he thought things were just ordinary and normal reminded me of Hongkongers. They suffered from the protests and the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic was even used as an excuse by the government to further suppress their voices, such as prohibiting (obviously not only) group gathering. Their daily lives are seriously affected and they are so trapped. Just like that scene in the old TV drama “The Greed of Man”, as the main character Ting Hai said, “I feel so worthless. I lost the sense of self. Everyday I am either staying home or going to the supermarket…I fear that I will be arrested by the police if I travel far.” The clip was shared online by Joyce Cheng.
The evil law imposed by Beijing, the downfall of Hong Kong, the police brutality and the failure of the government. We, Hongkongers have done nothing wrong. Then, why do we punish ourselves with the evil deeds of the corrupted? No, we cannot let them get their way.
We must stay strong. Eat well, sleep well, live well and stay safe. Be there to witness when the evils are finally punished. We have nothing to lose, our conscience is the only thing that we cannot let go of. Our days are no longer ordinary but they can be seen as new experiences. Our days should still be cherished, as in the way we live, treat others, work, struggle, strive to adapt, seek happiness…We will have no regrets as long as we follow our conscience. The National Security law is destructive and our days will be more difficult. Let the downfall of Hong Kong and China be. Without “Hongkongers”, Hong Kong is nothing.
Let us all use our own ways, to commemorate the fallen ones in the Tiananmen Square Massacre with the whole world…
