Iwassittingaloneinthedriver'sseatandateleveno'clockthesirenswentoffandtheywentonandon.ThenthemenupattheBullRingstartedtoblowthereveille,andweknewthatitwasallover.
Ididn'tfeelabitelated.Themenwhowereshovellingcoalwerequitedepressedandoneofthemsaid,"Thebloodywar'sover."Itwasn'tanexcitingtimeatall.Itwasn'tveryeasytofeeljubilantwhenweseemedtobesurroundedbyrowsandrowsofwhitecrossesandacresandacresofhospitalswithbedsfullofwoundedmen.Wejustthought,"ThankGodit'sover.Let'sgohome."

第一次世界大戰結束，對很多人來說，完全沒有想像中的歡欣。英國一位年輕女郎勞娜．尼爾是志願援助特遣隊護士。她回憶說：
我當時獨坐駕駛座上。十一點鐘，號笛響起來，響個不停。鬥牛場那邊，軍人吹起了起牀號。我們知道戰爭結束了。
我一點都不覺得興奮。有些人在鏟煤，顯得頗為沮喪。其中一人說：「他媽的戰爭結束了。」這絕對不是興奮的時候。我們周圍似乎都是一排一排的白色十字架，以及連綿不知多少畝地的醫院，醫院病牀上滿是病人。這時候要感到歡樂並不容易。大家只有一個想法：「謝天謝地，戰事完了。我們回家去吧。」
