Xi critic lambasts ‘insanity of forced demolition’ on Twitter

A prominent critic of Chinese President Xi Jinping seems to have defied a government decree by publishing his latest article on Twitter while under house arrest.

Xu Zhangrun, a Chinese scholar who was put under house arrest after criticising the Chinese government’s response to the coronavirus outbreak, lambasted Xi’s administration for behaving like a “devil” and said it was “reaching a dead end.”

“Our citizens are angry and they are not afraid anymore,” he said, according to a Twitter post uploaded to US-based scholar Han Lianchao’s account.

The post discussed the practice of forced demolition, a policy that was popular in major cities but had drawn widespread controversy, with critics saying it failed to respect individual rights.

“It is insanity,” Xu was quoted as saying. “It just lays bare the true faces of the constructed propaganda of utopia.”

The 57-year-old scholar has been under house arrest after repeated attempts to criticise the Beijing government. In May, for example, he described the Chinese government as sitting on an “isolated island in the vast ocean of civilisation.”
