Mass exodus at Jiangsu factory after workers humiliated by management
Workers at an electronics factory in China’s Jiangsu province have quit their jobs en masse after a humiliating incident involving staff cards, with only 100 employees out of 3,000 choosing to remain with the company.
Video footage circulating online showed managers of Kunshan Shishuo Electronic Company issuing new staff cards by calling out the employees’ names on a loudspeaker, before throwing the cards onto the ground for them to pick up.
The factory owners apologized on Saturday after the video clips sparked outrage, saying its managers chose an “inappropriate” way to hand out the cards due to space constraints.
Despite the factory hiring a recruitment firm to retain its staff, almost all of its employees decided to leave due to concerns about pay and workplace culture.
A former employee surnamed Ng said they had to work long hours but were only paid 3,900 yuan (US$570) a month. The cafeteria meals cost 8 yuan but didn’t contain any meat, he added.
Production at the factory has reportedly been halted and many workers were poached by neighboring factories who saw the mass exodus as a hiring opportunity, according to Chinese media.
Kunshan Shishuo has been involved in multiple labor disputes since 2016, including controversies about severances, overtime pay, and a worker’s death. Apple Daily was unable to reach the factory at the two phone numbers listed on its website.
