Sinopharm vaccine is 79% effective, Chinese maker claims

蘋果日報 2020/12/31 05:45

Chinese vaccine developer Sinopharm has achieved an efficacy rate of 79.34% in its anti-coronavirus jab, according to interim findings from the company’s final-stage trial.
The result, which has not been peer-reviewed, clears the minimum requirements set by Chinese regulators and Sinopharm is applying for market approval, according to the state-owned firm.
However, the result also means that the Sinopharm jab is less effective than those of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech, which have yielded an efficacy above 90%.
The Sinopharm vaccine, one of two that the company is developing, uses the same technology as Sinovac’s, which the Hong Kong government is bringing in for its people.
Leung Chi-chiu, a respiratory medicine expert in the city, said it would be difficult to verify Sinopharm’s claims as little data had been released. The findings failed to state the number of trial participants or their ages, he noted.
