A Chinese judge was jailed for 18 years and fined 4 million yuan (US$612,000) for taking bribes, mistrying defendants and committing fraud.
Zhang Jiahui, 55, the former vice president of Hainan’s Provincial High Court, amassed 43.75 million yuan between 2006 and 2019 from defendants in trials she oversaw.
She was also accused of abusing her position to help her husband Liu Yuansheng’s company gain 46.21 million yuan in 2015 and 2016.
Zhang, dubbed the “wealthiest female judge” by mainland media, was arrested in December last year. The court stated that the amount of money she received through bribes and fraud was “extraordinarily huge” and warranted the lengthy sentence and hefty fine. She was also ordered to surrender her criminal proceeds to the government.
Zhang’s family reportedly has assets exceeding 20 billion yuan, according to local media.
