Hong Kong police arrested seven, including members of the youth organization St-Politicism, on Monday, which marked the 100th day since 12 Hongkongers have been detained in Yantian detention center. Meanwhile, nearly a dozen staged a rally with the light sign “SAVE 12” in Taiwan to express solidarity with Hong Kong people.
The pro-democracy group St-Politicism held multiple street booths across Hong Kong on Monday evening, collecting letters for the 12 detainees. In Mong Kok, after the booth was closed, a group of police officers arrived and arrested four members and three other helpers, when they were heading to the post office to send the letters.
Aged between 18 to 47, the seven were initially accused of unlawful assembly. They were bailed out on Tuesday morning, with their charge changed to “disorderly conduct in a public place.”
In a statement released on Tuesday morning, police said they arrested four males and three females for disorderly conduct in a public place. Officers also issued fines to three men, between the age of 24 and 27, for violating social distancing.
St-Politicism has been a target of authorities for their campaign supporting the 12 detainees. In October, members were also issued HK$2,000 (US$258) fines for holding street booths.
Meanwhile, in Taipei, around 10 Hongkongers dressed in black waved protest flags and held the light sign “SAVE 12” outside Ximen metro station on Monday evening. They also handed out postcards to passersby, who wrote memos in support and stuck them to a paper boat, which symbolized the vessel that carried the 12 when they attempted to flee from Hong Kong to Taiwan.
The group did not accept any interview.
According to the Chinese authorities, the 12 have been transferred to Yantian District People’s Procuratorate for prosecution and are expected to stand trial in the next one to two weeks.
