Seeingthis,theRomansoldiersexhortedoneanothernottoallowsodireadisgrace,andleaptdownfromtheshipswithoneaccord,anddrewneartotheenemy.

公元前五十五年，尤利烏斯．愷撒第一次進侵不列顛。羅馬士兵見岸上不列顛人容止野蠻只待廝殺，又見海水很深，不禁膽戰心驚，逡巡船上。第十軍團的鷹旗手向天禱告之後，高聲喊道：「戰士們，假如不想把你們的鷹旗拱手讓給敵人，就跳下船吧。無論如何，後人會說，我沒有辜負國家，也沒有辜負我的將領。」他說罷，跳到海裏，手持鷹旗衝向敵人。
羅馬士兵見了，互相勉勵，都說不能容許這樣的奇恥大辱，紛紛跳到水裏，向敵陣走去。
【附注】愷撒大帝公元前五十五年和五十四年兩次侵略不列顛，都無功而還。公元四十三年，不列顛終於被羅馬帝國佔領，直到五世紀初。鷹旗是古羅馬軍旗，失去鷹旗算是莫大恥辱。
