‘Ink girl’ who defaced Xi Jinping portrait blasts authority’s surveillance on Twitter

In her first video upon release from a psychiatric facility, Dong Yaoqiong, also known as “Ink Girl” for defacing a poster of Chinese President Xi Jinping, accused the authorities of placing her under another form of surveillance by assigning her to work at a local government department.
“I cannot take this anymore. I am on the verge of breaking down,” said the 31-year-old Chinese activist.
Dong’s latest video was posted on Twitter by Ou Biaofeng, a Chinese dissident in Japan, who confirmed to Apple Daily that the footage was recorded the night before. “They said it is work, but it is another form of monitoring. I am restricted in terms of where I can go,” said Dong, who was twice admitted into a psychiatric institution by authorities.
She said she no longer fears the involuntary hospitalization. “Even if I am trapped for the rest of my life, I will accept my fate.” Dong vowed to fight for the little freedom she was left with. She found out that her father Dong Jianbao was detained only through Ou and has now lost contact with her father.
“I no longer want a life like this. I’d rather just die. Under such intensive surveillance, I cannot take it anymore. I am on the verge of breaking down,” she said in tears. “What have I done wrong? Did I break the law? Or is there an actual problem with my mental health?” she questioned, stressing that she is a normal person.
Ou also revealed the latest news about Dong’s father, who petitioned for his daughter during her involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. He worked at a coal mine in Hunan, where a leakage accident happened on Sunday. Out of 15 workers, only two made it out alive, including Dong.
