Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong, who is already serving time in jail, was mentioned in court on Friday on a fresh charge of taking part in an illegal assembly.
The 24-year-old was escorted handcuffed to the brief hearing related to a charge of participating in an unlawful assembly on Oct. 5 last year, and breaching a ban that prohibited demonstrators from wearing masks during protests. Wong and another activist, Koo Sze-yiu, were both charged with the offences.
Prosecutors on Friday asked for the case to be adjourned while they await the final ruling on the mask law by the city’s supreme court. Eastern Court Principal Magistrate Bina Chainrai postponed the hearing until Jan. 29 next year.
“Merry Christmas and happy new year,” Wong chanted to the public gallery as he left the court.
“Hang in there,” Wong’s supporters shouted, raising their hands in response.
