Detained activist Joshua Wong moved out of solitary confinement, urges others to fight on

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong has been sent back to the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre after spending 72 hours in solitary confinement at a hospital, where he had trouble sleeping as the room light was always switched on.
Wong was one of the three members of the now-disbanded pro-democracy group Demosisto, who were remanded this week after pleading guilty to charges related to a protest outside the police headquarters on June 21 last year. The other two were Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam.
When correctional center staff searched Wong, they said “external objects” were found inside Wong’s stomach via X-ray, so he was sent to solitary confinement at a hospital for 72 hours.
Wong told German newspaper Die Welt that he could not sleep under the bright light unless he used a mask to cover his eyes. Wong was barred from leaving the hospital room and was not allowed to exercise, the newspaper cited Wong as saying.
Like mainland Chinese dissidents, he did not hope for a fair judgment, but the protests would not stop even after the trio were sentenced on Dec. 2, said Wong, who faces up to three years in jail. He also faces two other cases, which will be heard on Dec. 5 and in February next year.
Former lawmaker Fernando Cheung visited Wong on Saturday morning, and said the 24-year-old was in reasonable shape and not tired. He could finally relax after leaving solitary confinement, Cheung said.
Even if the civil society faces harsh suppression, the movement would return if people did not give up their fighting spirit, Cheung quoted Wong as saying.
Before he was remanded, Wong told Apple Daily that the Hong Kong government would never win the hearts of the people, regardless of the suppression it enforced.
“And the key right now is simply to survive the battle,” he said.
