U.S. President Donald Trump has kept Chinese president Xi Jinping waiting so that he can speak to Fox News’ talk show host Sean Hannity, said Brian Stelter at a book event organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong on Tuesday.

The CNN chief media correspondent disclosed in his recently published Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth, which reveals how the pro-Trump TV channel has helped shape Trump’s view.

Stelter especially mentioned Sean Hannity, the host of a viral American talk show and questioned his relationship with Trump.

“I think Trump uses Hannity in the way that many men rely on their spouses,” he said on FCC’s online book event. “What Sean would always say is, ‘no one knows the truth about my relationship with Donald Trump’ - okay then Sean you should tell us now.”

“And it’s played out on the air where Trump was bragging about ‘I’m having the Chinese president wait until you and I get off the phone’,” Stelter said, adding that he thought it was another lie and exaggeration from Trump until he fact-checked from sources that it was true.

Stelter confirmed that Trump did keep Xi Jinping waiting, after which Beijing responded by keeping Trump waiting a little longer, “and the call didn’t happen until 1 a.m. in the morning, Washington time.”

He stressed that their mysterious relationship should be unveiled, as Hannity “has the power” that Trump prioritizes him.

Stelter said he decided to write the book after receiving calls from Fox News sources who were dismayed by the company’s relationship with Trump and how it has affected coverage.

He said a sizable portion of “misinformation” released by Trump came from stories that first appear on Fox News’ hard-right talk shows.
