WhentheEnglishmanagerofthecoconutplantation,alongwithhisassistant,visitedtheship,theGermanshurriedlyconcealednewspaperswhichmightgiveawaythefactthatwarhadbrokenout,andpliedthemwithwhisky.TheEnglishmanwasevenmoredelightedwhenMullersenttwoengineerstorepairhismotorboat.Inreturn,hesentaboattotheEmdenloadedwithfreshfruit,fish,vegetablesandapig.InternationalfriendshipwastheorderofthedayonDiegoGarcia,whileinFlanderstheBritishandGermanswereslaughteringeachotherinthousands.

一九一四年十月九日，德國巡洋艦埃姆登號開到迪戈加西亞島。這個小珊瑚島位在印度洋，十分孤寂，還未聽到歐洲爆發戰爭的消息。埃姆登號艦長穆勒決定在這裏把船修理好。
島上椰樹園經理是英國人，攜一名助手來訪，德軍連忙把報紙收起來，以免暴露戰爭爆發的事實，並殷勤奉上威士忌酒。穆勒還派兩名工程師為那英國人修理汽艇，令他更加高興。他投桃報李，遣一條船載着新鮮水果、魚、蔬菜以及一隻豬，送給埃姆登號的德軍。迪戈加西亞島一時洋溢着國際友誼，而在法蘭德斯，英軍和德軍正拚命廝殺，死者以千計。
