Wuhan virus forgotten? Wild frogs still sold on the sly
There was suspicion that the Wuhan virus came from wild animals, which have infected humans and led to a huge global pandemic. So far, over 800,000 people have lost their lives because of the virus. Although the mainland has enforced a complete ban on buying and selling wild animals, the Chinese media has discovered there was a sign of revival on wild animal trading in Wuhan, where has only just recovered from the local epidemic, since the merchant was seen publicly selling wild frogs. The discovery has shocked the public, who criticized them for forgetting the pain before the wound is healed. Even netizens from the mainland cannot hold back from their anger, “would you die when you don’t eat them?”, “such unrepentant stupid thing!” Authority responded by emphasizing that selling wild animals is forbidden in Wuhan and everyone is free to report those who break the law to the authority.
Many mainland media platforms have recently uploaded a news video showing Wuhan merchants selling wild frogs on the sly which has received complaints from the local citizens. It was seen in the video, that merchants were putting bags of frogs on the dirty roadside where puddles and rubbish were nearby. Some merchants even told customers the wild frogs cost 25-30 Yuan (US$3.6-4.4) per 0.5 kg and are delicious.
According to “The Paper” news platform, “Wild Animal Conservation Law” stipulates that terrestrial wild animals with important economic and scientific research value must be protected, and frogs are one of them. At the same time, the implementation on “comprehensively prohibiting the illegal trade of wild animals, eliminating the bad habits of wild animal consumption, and protecting the health and safety of the people” early this year also required that everything from the “Wild Animal Conservation Law” and related law that forbid people from catching, trading, transporting and eating wild animals must be strictly adhered to. The punishment for those who commit the offense would be more severe than what currently was set by the law.
Although frogs are good for people, eating wild frogs would do more damage to the ecology, which in the end would badly affect the human species. Therefore there is more reason to protect them than to eat them. However, as Jiemian news said, as much as people are aware of the ban, but it is still difficult to enforce the law. The officials who supervise the Wuhan market commented that, although selling wild animals are banned, but breeding is still allowed, so they would be sending people to the market to investigate.
