China plans to vaccinate 50 million people ahead of Lunar New Year: report

蘋果日報 2020/12/18 22:15

China is to vaccinate 50 million people against COVID-19 ahead of the annual spike in travel for the Lunar New Year, when hundreds of millions of people head to their hometowns or travel overseas, according to a Hong Kong media report.
Beijing is preparing to distribute 100 million doses of vaccines produced by Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech after granting emergency-use status to three vaccines from the two Chinese firms, the South China Morning Post reported.
Mainland officials have been asked to administer the first 50 million doses by Jan.15 and the second by Feb. 5. The Lunar New Year holiday begins in the following week, the report said.
High-priority groups including health workers, police officers, firefighters, customs officers, cargo handlers, and transport and logistics workers will receive the first batches of the vaccines, the report added.
A number of mainland provinces and cities have begun vaccinations for small groups of people who have special needs, according to mainland new reports.
Health authorities in Jiaxing in eastern Zhejiang province have received vaccines for medical workers. Yiwu, also in Zhejiang, has started vaccinations for people who need to travel abroad at short notice at a price of 200 yuan (US$31) per dose, the reports said.
Jiangsu province announced on Tuesday that it would acquire vaccines from Sinovac Biotech and Sinopharm for an emergency inoculation program.
Five China-made candidate vaccines are going through Phase-3 trials, which is the final stage before regulatory approval. These include two candidates from Sinopharm, one from Sinovac, one from CanSino Biologics and one from Zhifei Biological Products.
China reported one locally contracted COVID-19 case, in Sichuan, and 11 imported cases on Thursday, taking the country’s tally to 86,789.
