From ‘Tank Man’ to ‘Umbrella Man’, Hongkongers fight on (Lui Yue)

On the night of June 3, 31 years ago, with the use of more than ten thousands forces of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Deng XiaoPing drenched the democracy movement in Beijing in a bloodbath. At around 10:30 pm, the 38th group Army fired and machine-gunned the nearby apartments at Muxidi. According to Tiananmen Mothers, 36 people died at Muxidi, including Ding Zilin, a professor from Renmin University of China, the youngest son of Jiang Peikun, 17-year-old Jiang Jielian.
At 1:30 am, June 4, the 38th group Army and 15th Airborne Corps blocked Tiananmen Square. Meanwhile, the 27th and 65th group Armies and the 24th Army completely encircled the Square. Thousands of students and citizens started moving towards the Monument to the People's Heroes which is in the middle of the square.
Hou Dejian and Zhuo Tuo attempted to negotiate with Ji Xinguo, the political commissar of the 38th Army. At 4 am, the government's loudspeaker announced: "Disperse of the Square begins now. We agree with the students' request to clear the Square.”
At 4:30 am, the lights relit in the Square and the troops began to advance on the Monument from all sides. The students began to leave the Monument at around 5:10 am.
Just past 6 am on June 4, when the students were heading back to campus, three tanks pursued them from the Square, firing tear gas and killing 11 students.
Later in the morning of June 4, PLA continued their massacre in Beijing. A 19-year-old High school student, Wang Nan, was killed by the PLA because of photographing.
Since June 4, 1990, the candles have been lit in Victoria Park for 29 years “Release the dissidents, rehabilitate the 1989 pro-democracy movement, demand accountability of the June 4th massacre, end one-party dictatorship and build a democratic China” have always been our demands. Yet , university students in the PRC know nothing about June 4, and people who work in the media industry in mainland China have no idea who Liu Xiaobo is .
Hong Kong people is determined in safeguarding freedom
Our consciousnesses are evoked because of civilised and free capitalism. Nonetheless, the NPC’s announcement on August 31, 2014 that Beijing exercising overall jurisdiction over Hong Kong has brutally offended our life since. Our freedom and rule of law are fading away gradually. We are more determined than those in the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Beijing, in safeguarding our system, values and capitalism. We have more definite goals and have spent a long time.
CCP has deliberately concealed the sin of Deng XiaoPing - How many people did he kill? Nevertheless, the sacrifice of our young people in the anti-extradition law movement as triggered by Carrie Lam, is nothing less than those who sacrificed on June 4, 1989. NPC approved the National Security Law of Hong Kong on May 28, pushing Hong Kong people to take to the streets again amid the Wuhan Virus. It is now the 31th anniversary of June 4, 1989 and we are no longer allowed to hold the Candlelight Vigil. Yet we are unified with a single will. We cannot get cold feet.
CCP thoroughly exposed its wild ambition when it announced that the Sino-British Joint Declaration was a historical document three years ago. “Deng XiaoPing had approved the speech outline of Zhao Ziyang. I know about it but which President of China knows about it? Who knows and directly heard what Deng Xiaoping said?” interrogated Bao Tong, who joined the negotiation between the British and the PRC as well as drafting speeches for Zhao Ziyang.
The ‘Tank Man’ on June 4 in 1989 and the ‘Umbrella Man’ of Hong Kong are the representations of our courage to confront the powers-that-be. Let’s see how Emperor Xi, who sacrifices Hong Kong and confronts the U.S., can survive with power.
