Chinese ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, spoke to Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou over the phone, expressing his care and reiterating that China will secure her safe return to the country.
The Chinese Embassy to Canada published news of the phone conversation on Monday night. “You have been wrongly detained by Canadian authorities for two years. We are very concerned,” Cong told Meng. He stressed Beijing’s determination to defend the legal rights of Chinese citizens and corporations, adding It would keep urging Canada to take China’s concerns seriously and release Meng.
“Fairness lies in the eyes of the beholder. Justice will prevail. Please hold on to your belief in victory and maintain your health. We anticipate your safe return home,” said the diplomat.
Canadian media outlets reported that cross-examination of witnesses in Meng’s case, including Canadian law enforcement officers and border officials, will continue until the week of Christmas. Though lawyers for Meng and prosecution have both said they expected the cross-examination to end by this week, Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes has set four more days for the trial from Dec. 21 to 24.
In an interview last month, Cong said that some news portals are distorting the truth about the Chinese Communist Party to mislead the public. He slammed Canadians for being disrespectful to the CCP and warned them to mind their words.
