Elderly stabber of ‘Long Hair’ tells court he did it for Hong Kong

A court in Hong Kong extended bail for an 81-year-old man who admitted stabbing ousted lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung with a metal chisel and claimed he did it “for the sake of Hong Kong.”

Wong Sum-kau confessed to stabbing Leung, better known as “Long Hair,” on April 16 in Sai Ying Pun. He was charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
“I did it for the sake of Hong Kong. No one forced me to, I did it on my own,” Wong told magistrate Cheang Kei-hong on Thursday.
The attack happened as Leung was holding a protest outside Beijing’s liaison office. He sustained minor injuries to the right side of his waist where he was stabbed with a metal chisel. Wong at the time said he was “teaching Leung a lesson for meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs.”
In court on Thursday, Wong said he hoped the magistrate would deal with his case like any other assault incident, but added that Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui and pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong “would both die sooner or later.”
Cheang said Wong’s testimony showed that he had a “passionate love for Hong Kong society” but had committed the crime because of differing political opinions. He believed it would be suitable for the defendant to carry out community service as punishment, but that form of sentencing would require a medical report. The magistrate did not rule out the possibility of a jail term.
Leung later told reporters that Wong was a typical “blue ribbon” — a term that labels Hongkongers taking the side of the government and the police — who had become a product of the Communist Party’s brainwashing. “He went from being a victim of the Communist Party to being a perpetrator.”
Leung added that he understood why the magistrate did not want to put Wong in prison, on account of his age.
When asked what he thought about Wong wishing Hui and Joshua Wong dead, Leung replied: “Is it because he himself is afraid of dying soon so he starts wishing death on others instead?”
The case was adjourned for sentencing on Oct. 13.
