In1800,the54thfootregimentoftheBritisharmywassenttoEgypt.OnreachingMalta,thesoldiers'wiveshadtoreturntoEngland.UnfortunatelythetwoshipscarryingthemwerecapturedbytheFrench.
WithtypicalGallicgallantry,theFrenchreturnedthewomentotheBritishbaseatMinorca,whereanIrishregimentwasgarrisoned.SoonnewsreachedMinorcathattheEgyptianexpeditionhadsufferedadisasterandmostofthemenofthe54thwerelost.Thewidows,seekingconsolation,nowmarriedmenoftheIrishgarrison.
Butfatehadnotfinishedwiththemyet.TheIrishsoldierswerelatersenttoEgyptthemselves,wheretheylearnedthatthe54thregiment'sexpeditionhadnotfoundered,norhadtheregimentceasedtoexist.Theerstwhile"widows"foundthemselveswithtwohusbands.Intheendjustoneoftheprevioushusbandstookbackhiswife.
