Someofthe7thCavalry,retreatingwithCaptainEdgerly,showedgreatheroism.IntheheatofthebattleEdgerlynoticedthatPrivateSaundershadabroadgrinonhisfacealthoughhewassittinginaperfectshowerofbullets.Afterthefiringceasedthenextday,heaskedSaunderswhathewaslaughingatatsuchatime.Saundersreplied,“IwaslaughingtoseewhatpoorshotsthoseIndianswere.Theywereshootingtoolowandtheirbulletswerespatteringdustlikedropsofrain.”
