The wife of a mainland poet who was detained for subversion after he expressed support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests is now also facing the same charge as her husband, according to court documents.
Wang Li, also known as Wang Liqin, was arrested for subversion on July 24 and has been detained in Yunnan, according to court documents that became available on Saturday. Her husband, Wang Zang, was taken away in May and arrested on July 3 for the same charge, the document said.
Wang Li had been using Twitter to draw attention to her husband’s detention but went silent in mid-June, with friends also saying they had not heard from her.
Ni Yulan, a civil rights lawyer and a friend of the couple, said Wang Li had never publicly voiced her political opinions and only called attention to her husband’s case after he was taken away.
The couple has four young children, who are currently being cared for by Wang Zang’s mother, according to sources.
Wang Li previously said she was taken away with her husband in May but was released after a day. She said she had been placed under surveillance since.
