Chris Patten: “An apple a day, and it’s good for you”

“People say that an apple a day, and it’s good for you. And so I guess it’s true in a broader sense as well,” said Chris Patten, Hong Kong’s last colonial governor.
One of the reasons why Hong Kong has been so successful is because of its freedoms, which are under threat from Beijing now, he warned. Freedom of the press and of expression have long been the cornerstones of the city’s stability and prosperity. Free access to information is particularly vital to those in business.
“You should know what people are really doing. You should be able to know what the objective truth is, about your own society, and about the world.”
He urges people in Hong Kong to practically support free media by purchasing newspapers that insist on reporting the truth despite growing pressure.
“Please support the free press, the free media, which help make Hong Kong such a wonderful city. I hope we’ll continue to do so, whatever the challenges represented by the Chinese Communist Party against all the promises they made in the Treaty over the next months or years.”
