Taiwan to regulate books by CCP, PLA in bid to curb Chinese propaganda
Taiwan will be reviewing publications by the Chinese Communist Party or the People’s Liberation Army before they are allowed to be imported to the self-governed island, Culture Minister Lee Yung-te announced on Monday.
With the assistance of the Mainland Affairs Council, the Ministry of Culture is amending legislation to impose new regulations on China’s state-affiliated publications.
Taiwan will not allow the CCP to take advantage of its freedom and democracy to conduct cultural invasion and the Taiwanese government will take necessary measures against Chinese propaganda, the council asserted.
“If a country, faced with the invasion of an unfriendly country, does not build fortifications to defend itself, I doubt what its government is doing,” said Lee.
Since Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined a new plan for reunification under the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence last year, Beijing has stepped up propaganda in Taiwan through different mediums and platforms, in an attempt to sway public opinion and infiltrate society, said the council.
It stressed that Taiwan is a free, pluralistic and democratic society and will not allow any cultural invasion that may damage its way of life. The government is wary of Chinese state propaganda and will strengthen its defense accordingly.
