貴欄說onehalf等於0.5而非1.5，但我在美國求學時，有一次測驗，我以onehalf當作0.5，結果被扣分，同學都說onehalf等於12。
讀了這封信之後，我問過三位有學問朋友的意見，一位是英國人。他說：IntheUnitedKingdom,onehalfmeansunequivocally0.5andnothingelse（在英國，onehalf毫無疑問是0.5，不可有其他解釋）。

另一位是現居美國的英國人。他說：WhatcanIsayaboutthecorruptionoftheEnglishlanguage?IfonelistenstoanAmericantalking,1.5getsslurredtogethersothat"anda"disappearswiththeresultthatthephoneticspellingof"oneandahalf"endsupas"onehalf".Ireallydon'tthinkitisthe"official"Webster'sDictionary（pronounced"dictionairy"）,butwhoamItoquestionwhathappensonthissideoftheAtlantic?（看到英文之墮落，真有「夫復何言」之感。美國人說話，會把代表0.5的幾個字含含糊糊串起來說，結果oneandahalf的拼法變成onehalf。我想，那不是正式的美國字典用法（他們把dictionary（字典）讀作dictionairy），但我憑甚麼質疑大西洋這一邊的發展呢？）
第三位朋友是美國人。她說：Onehalfshouldmean0.5.SomelanguageteachersintheUnitedStatesdon'tevenknowtheirownlanguage（Onehalf應是0.5。美國一些語文教師連自己的語文都不懂）。
