Residents in Beijing could be forgiven for thinking temperatures this week are as low as -20 degrees Celsius, with gusty winds and a phenomenal cold spell forecast to hit the Chinese mainland on Tuesday.
The National Meteorological Center issued an orange cold wave warning for the second day, saying most of the central and eastern regions would experience gusts of up to 62 kilometers per hour (38.5 miles per hour) and further temperature drops.
The municipality of Beijing also issued a chilly weather warning and a gale warning as temperatures fell by more than 8 degrees to between -6 and -13 degrees Celsius (21.2 and 8.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The cold snap was almost on par with the lowest temperature recorded in the past decade, officials said.
According to a forecast by the China Meteorological Administration, the chilly spell will affect 27 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, while the northern part of southern China, located in the subtropical zone, will also experience sub-zero temperatures.
Taiwan was affected by the cold season as well. On Monday, the Central Weather Bureau issued a special report, saying that temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius might be recorded throughout Taiwan, with the weather in seven counties likely to dip under 6 degrees.
