Chinese president Xi Jinping and French president Emmanuel Macron reached major consensus on bilateral and international issues during a phone call on Wednesday, state media Xinhua reports.
Xi urged the European Union to adopt positive policies towards China, saying Beijing is committed to promoting “healthy and stable” development of China-E.U. relations.
“Amid increasing instability and uncertainty, the contemporary world calls for more responsibilities of major countries,” the report cited the president, who noted that the consensus of the two countries would help uphold multilateralism and safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core.
Macron said the two countries have had sound cooperation during the fight against the coronavirus, according to Beijing’s mouthpiece.
The French president also expressed his hope of reaching the EU-China investment agreement as soon as possible, adding that Paris is ready to work with Beijing to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The two reached eight consensuses during the conversation, including actively participating in the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator Initiative and the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility led by the World Health Organization, and ramping up support for developing countries.
They also pledged to enhance cooperation on customs inspection and quarantine measures to ensure the stability of supply chains.
