Dense haze caused by a sudden drop in temperature in northern and central parts of China forced the suspension of highway and ferry services on Monday.
The National Meteorological Center issued an orange cold wave alert, the second highest warning, on Monday morning as a cold snap hit large parts of China.
Streets in eastern areas including Shanghai, and Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, were blanketed with dense haze, prompting a number of highways to close or limit car speeds. Ferries between Beilun and Zhoushan in Zhejiang were suspended.
Chengdu, the capital of southwestern Sichuan province, has been affected by haze and polluted air particles since Saturday. Authorities issued an orange alert and moved to reduce the use of bicycles by increasing bus and subway train frequencies, Chinese media reported.
Some residents wrote online that they were suffering from breathing problems due to the dense haze, and were considering moving out of Chengdu temporarily.
The haze also led to an increase in cases of eye irritations, Chinese media reported. Many of the people affected wore contact lenses which attracted airborne pollutants, health experts said.
The severe haze was caused by accumulation of warm and humid mists that trapped air pollutants in the Sichuan basin, where Chengdu is situated, environmental scientist Zhang Yuanhang told Chinese media.
