‘I won’t go into exile’ like Ted Hui: former pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting
Former pro-democracy legislator Lam Cheuk-ting said on Friday that he would not go into exile, a day after his former colleague, Ted Hui, announced his decision to go into self-imposed exile, following a three-day visit to Denmark.
Hui’s abrupt announcement on Thursday shocked his fellow Democratic Party members. Lam said he did not know in advance about Hui’s plan to go into exile, adding that he himself was prepared to be jailed.
“I respect Ted’s decision and understand the various pressures he faced. It was a difficult decision,” Lam told Apple Daily.
Both Lam and Hui had been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of public justice. They were charged because they allegedly erased cell phone photographs that would have identified demonstrators in city-wide anti-government protests in July last year. Both had their passports seized.
Democratic Party chairman Wu Chi-wai told a Commercial Radio interviewer that the party had not known in advance about Hui’s decision to go into exile.
Hui on Thursday announced his exile from Denmark, where he attended a meeting on climate change.
