China to step up efforts in political security protection

蘋果日報 2020/06/04 12:35

China’s Ministry of Public Security has reportedly undergone internal reforms and will change the name of its Bureau of Domestic Security Protection to the Bureau of Political Security Protection in a move believed to reflect the party’s increased efforts to crack down on sabotage, subversion and secession.
Political commentator Johnny Lau Yui-siu said “imaginary threats” perceived by Chinese President Xi Jinping and infighting among high-level officials were likely causes for the change.
According to Sing Tao Daily in Hong Kong, Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi had repeatedly stressed the importance of making political security a top priority and called for expanded efforts into maintaining social stability.
Assistant Minister Chen Xiyuan, who is also director of the ministry’s first bureau, said there was a need to forge an “iron army” for this purpose.
Lau said that the reform showed the increased influence and prevalence of politics in all aspects of life in China. Looking ahead to next year’s National People’s Congress, Lau said that Xi, who has set himself up to be the country’s ruler for life, will be looking to tackle all perceived threats to his leadership, including from dissenting voices within his party.
Discord between Xi, Premier Li Keqiang and Vice President Wang Qishan has also become increasingly obvious and could be considered as an issue of political security, he added.
