Beijing obstructs activists from attending hearing of Save HK12 lawyer
Wife of imprisoned Chinese lawyer Yu Wensheng was intimidated by security police on Monday, after she announced her plan to visit Chengdu for a professional license hearing of another human rights lawyer Lu Siwei, who has been aiding families of the 12 Hongkongers detained in the mainland.
Xu Yan, wife of Yu, first revealed on Twitter that she has brought a ticket from Beijing to Chengdu to attend the hearing scheduled on Wednesday. Several security agents knocked on her door shortly afterwards to ask about her travel plans, while lambasting her for being a “traitor.”
Xu tweeted she had boarded a flight to Chengdu on Tuesday noon.
Another activist Li Dawei said he cannot attend the hearing, as he was not able to get a ticket and has been closely monitored by officers in his apartment since Tuesday morning.
The Sichuan province’s Department of Justice accused Lu of violating the country’s lawyers law by “publishing inappropriate speech online” early this month. He has assisted Yu, who was arrested in 2018 for helping activists rounded up in the 709 Crackdown.
Xu said her husband has not been well, after he was sentenced to four years in jail for “inciting subversion of state power” last year. Tortured by police, Yu has become handicapped and lost his teeth. The Beijing-based lawyer was also denied medical treatments in custody.
