China’s ‘yes lady’ Shen Jilan reportedly in critical condition
Shen Jilan, the longest-serving deputy of the National People’s Congress and a loyalist of the People’s Republic of China, is reportedly in critical condition suffering from cancer. But the news has yet to be verified by official sources.
There were recent photos on the internet of a woman said to be the 90-year-old Shen in what appeared to be a hospital bed. It was said that she has been suffering from stomach cancer and receiving treatment in the Changzhi People’s Hospital in Shanxi province in northern China. Sources close to Shen revealed that she has been ill since the end of May and was transferred from Beijing to the hospital in Shanxi. Her stomach cancer reportedly has reached the final stage and doctors did not recommend surgery because of her age.
Rumors also have Shen contracted the coronavirus in Beijing during the two sessions earlier.
But none of the reports have been confirmed by official sources. In fact, on June 22, the China National Narcotics Control Committee posted an anti-drug video on WeChat channel featuring Shen as the spokesperson. The video that went live ahead of June 26’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was said to be filmed in June, but netizens found it suspicious and questioned if it was in fact shot this month.
Hong Kong i-Cable News’ request for an interview with Shen last month during the two sessions was declined, citing health reasons.
A former farmer coming from a village in the mountains of Taihang, Shanxi province, Shen is the only deputy who has served the NPC since 1954 starting at the age of 25 and has been re-elected for 66 years in a row, a record in China. Last year, she was awarded the Medal of the Republic, the highest order of honor in the country.
In an interview in 2010, Shen said as a lawmaker in China, one must follow the order of the Chinese Communist Party and she has never voted against any motions or proposals at the legislature.
Shen has tabled many jaw-dropping proposals at the NPC, including abolishing the television remote control, making watching state media CCTV’s channel one mandatory so as to promote the gospel of socialism, as well as political censorship for all internet users in China.
