‘May Heaven smile on you’: heartwarming wishes pour in for Jimmy Lai

蘋果日報 2020/12/06 05:47

More than 50 letters have landed in the in-tray of Apple Daily’s office in the two days since Jimmy Lai was taken into custody on Thursday, lending support to the detained founder of this newspaper.
A frontline disciplinary service staffer wrote: “Hongkongers will never forget what you have done for us. Please take good care of yourself and don’t give up. Chin up, Hongkongers.” The writer further said Hong Kong was no longer the city he once knew and that many colleagues did not dare to speak up, fearing for their jobs.
A doctor who had been an ardent supporter of Apple Daily since 1995 said the political detention of Lai was heartbreaking and hoped he would hang in there and take care of himself. Apple Daily had “spoken for justice and contributed to democracy,” the doctor said, pledging to continue to support the newspaper.
A student thanked Lai for “giving Hongkongers a newspaper of freedom” that shielded people from being brainwashed by the education of the tyrannical regime and fostered independent thinking. The note ended with the blessing: “May peace always be with good people. You are not alone.”
A reader described Lai as a “great hero” who had strived for human rights and encouraged him to keep fighting.
Another supporter, from Sydney, believed many places in the world that were threatened by China’s Communist Party had been awakening. The supporter hoped the law and the people who guarded the truth would protect Lai and that Hong Kong could escape tyranny in the end.
A Hongkonger living in the United Kingdom, who read Apple Daily every day, said the newspaper provided a platform for overseas Hongkongers to learn about what was happening in the city. The writer thanked Lai for speaking up for Hong Kong people, reminded him to keep warm and healthy, and hoped he would return home safely.
A self-professed ordinary resident of Hong Kong admitted crying every time Lai went on video with an interview. Lai had sacrificed himself for the future of Hong Kong without benefiting one bit, which was both shocking and touching. The resident said to Lai that “the people of Hong Kong owe you too much” and hoped that Heaven would smile upon him.
Lai will spend at least four months locked up at the Lai Chi Kok detention center, after failing to secure bail over a fraud charge related to the lease for his newspaper headquarters.
