ThepersonofGeorgeWashingtontookonasymbolicsignificanceforboththeAmericansandtheBritishduringtheWarofIndependence.Onasummereveningin1776,agroupofBritishsoldiersandGermanmercenarieshaderectedahugebonfireonwhichtheyhaddecidedtoburnineffigyfouroftheprominentAmericanleaders:JohnWitherspoonandGeneralsGerogeWashington,IsraelPutnamandCharlesLee.Asthedummieswerethrownintotheflamesasuddenstormbrokeandsenteveryonescamperingforcover.Afterthedownpourhadabated,thesoldiersreturnedtotheirbonfiretofindthatthreeofthedummieshadbeenthoroughlyburned,butthatofWashingtonhadmiraculouslysurvived.ThesuperstitioussoldiersweregreatlyaffectedbythisinexplicableeventandbegantowonderwhethertheAmericanleaderhadpowersbeyondthoseofmortalmen.

美國獨立戰爭期間，喬治．華盛頓其人對英、美雙方都具象徵意義。一七七六年一個夏夜，一些英軍和德意志雇傭兵堆起巨大篝火，準備焚燒美國四大領袖的肖像：約翰．威瑟斯龐、喬治．華盛頓將軍、伊斯雷爾．普特南將軍、查理．李將軍。四個肖像拋進火焰的時候，暴風雨突然降臨，人人走避。後來雨勢減弱，士兵回到篝火前，只見三個肖像完全燒毀了，但華盛頓的肖像奇迹般沒有被火吞噬。這件不可思議的事，令迷信的士兵心頭大震，懷疑這個美國領袖有超乎凡人的力量。
