New committee to keep Chinese actors’ ethics and conduct in check
China’s professional body of television actors has set up a committee to regulate its members’ behaviors, saying that it will keep a blacklist of those who break the law or commit immoral acts.
The China Television Artists Association has set up a mechanism to assess actors and hold misconduct accountable, according to the association’s chairperson Hu Zhanfan. The new system will deal with cases based on their category and severity and impose a uniform standard on all cases, he said.
The new “committee for professional ethics in the television industry” implements Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision of socialism with Chinese characteristics and aims to promote a healthy creative environment in the business, Hu added.
Film director Hu Mei, whose work include “Confucius” (2017) and the “Dream of the Red Chamber” trilogy to be debuted next year, said it was necessary for the association to make the move. “Our industry does have some crude, low-quality productions, and some individuals have acted inappropriately, in a way that was unethical or even illegal,” she slammed.
The new system was also backed by actress Ding Liuyuan, actor Lin Yongjian and screenwriter Hao Jinming.
