Mainland activist Xiao Yuhui has been arrested after he shared a Hong Kong petition campaign initiated by Apple Daily in a WeChat group chat. It is understood that Xiao was taken away from his home in Huicheng District in Huizhou, Guangdong, on Wednesday.
Apple Daily learned that Xiao’s arrest could be related to the campaign “One Hongkonger One Letter to Save Hong Kong,” which was launched on May 24 on the frontpage of the newspaper. The campaign asked netizens to write to the United States President Donald Trump and ask him to “save Hong Kong.”
A source familiar with the matter told Apple Daily that as of now, at least two people have been arrested. They have been detained for more than 24 hours and appear to be under arrest rather than just administrative detention.
It is understood that Xiao and many members of the WeChat group chat in which the hyperlink was shared were taken away. Netizens said many of those who were arrested for sharing information about Hong Kong protests were detained at Yuantongqiao police station. It is understood that Xiao’s family went to visit him on Friday afternoon and confirmed that Xiao was detained at that police station.
